The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County is a grassroots organization rooted in the love a group of concerned Memphians had for neglected animals in our community. For over 90 years, we have worked tirelessly to save animal lives.

Volunteers are at the heart of this mission and absolutely essential to the work that is done every day. Who can volunteer? We encourage everyone in our community who has a passion for animal welfare to check out our volunteer opportunities!

We welcome volunteers 18 years and older to join us in our life-saving mission. We will provide you with orientation and training to ensure your time with us is successful, safe, and enjoyable. Orientations happen once a month – you will be invited once you have submitted a volunteer application.

Volunteering at the Humane Society is very rewarding, in fact, volunteer engagement increased over 83% last year. There are so many reasons volunteers loving coming here, including spending time with dogs and cats, helping with fundraising events and administrative tasks, learning useful dog training tips, and gaining insight into animal behavior under the guidance of our skilled staff. They also receive reduced fee adoptions after four months of service, discounts with some of our partners and discounted tickets for our events!
